Tesseract, the developer that brought you the free tool MyInternetTV to watch TV on your PC and the manager Memo Password to securely organize all your passwords, brings you another handy tool – the free trace route application The Tracer. Thanks to the functionality offered by this application, you will be able to find out where a website is from, for example. Speaking about functionality, The Tracer features the following three tools: traceroute, whois, and port scanner.

The setup wizard that guides you through the installation process will invite you to choose between a Quick and a Recommended installation. Please note that the Quick Installation includes the Delta Toolbar. A toolbar will be installed alongside The Tracer, your homepage will be changed and your default search engine will be changed as well. If you don’t like toolbars, you can opt out by going with the Advanced Installation.

The minimum system requirements for running The Tracer are quite low: Pentium 3 700MHz processor, 128MB of Ram, .Net Framework 4, Windows operating system. Even old PCs will easily meet these requirements – modern PCs will have no problems meeting them.

The application’s interface is made up of 4 panels: a map, a log panel, a panel with IP and domain name info, and a report panel. Above these panels there’s a traditional File Menu and a bar with a section to enter an address and start the trace process.

Speaking about that, there’s nothing complicated about performing a trace. All you have to do is enter an address and launch the process; moments later the application’s interface will be populated with info on the trace.

Traceroute, as already mentioned above, is just one of the three tools offered by The Tracer. The other two are whois and port scanner. You can access them from the Tools menu in the upper left hand corner of the application’s interface.

The Tracer is a free application.

The Tracer provides free and easy access to three handy tools – traceroute, whois, and port scanner. Go get the application if this is the sort of functionality you’re looking for.

Pros

The system requirements for running The Tracer are very low. You will have no problems getting accustomed to the interface. You can easily access three tools: traceroute, whois, and port scanner. The Tracer is a free application.

Cons

Wants to install a toolbar, change your homepage, new tab page, and default search provider. Opens The Tracer webpage on Tesseract’s website every time you launch the application.
